Talk with Bedford Catholic Men’s Group

DSCF0342Sunday 10th July 2011

Garry and Ellen were recently invited by Samuel Baker to talk about their book “Where are all the Men?” with a group of Catholic Christian men in Bedford.

Samuel explained that the group had only recently been formed. He contacted Ellen and Garry after finding their blog. He decided that the topic might be of interest since most of the group members are married men.

In their talk Garry and Ellen outlined the events that led to their writing the book , together with some of the insights they had gained during that process, and how it had changed their lives.

The key issues were discussed openly with those present.

The accompanying photograph shows Samuel standing between Garry and Ellen in the front row, with other members of the group.

Authors Interviewed on UK National Christian Radio

In the Premier Studios with Maria Toth (right)Authors interviewed on Premier Christian Radio – UK National Broadcaster

On Friday 11th March Garry and Ellen were in interviewed on Premier Radio, the UK national Christian broadcaster from their studios in Pimlico, London.

Maria Toth, pictured on the right of the photo, presenter of the weekday programme “Woman to Woman” discussed the authors’ personal experiences and their reasons for writing the book.

In reply to Maria’s question Garry said they had set out to examine the cultural changes in Western moral standards which had resulted in a reduction by three quarters of recorded marriages in the UK since 1970.

During the programme the authors said that the questions posed in both the title of the book, and in the subtitle “Why don’t more men commit to God? Why don’t more men commit to marriage?” are deliberate. Ellen explained that this was to get readers searching within themselves to find answers from their own experience. It is important that we know the fundamental nature of both men and women, the complementarity of the sexes rather than differences, in marriage as well as in society. This is the core to forming long-lasting relationships based true knowledge and understanding of both oneself and the other. But to achieve this one needs to learn to listen.

In answer to Maria’s question about the changes that being married entails, Ellen ventured that women are face with extreme changes in giving up so much more of themselves to pregnancy and child-birth. Garry added that too many men get married but expect to remain bachelor in attitude. Elucidating this point he went on to explain the hierarchy of relationships beginning with the primary relationship with God, then spouse, family, work and so forth.

Ellen responded eloquently about the need to realise God’s unconditional love for each and every one of us. When this realisation is absent in our lives we put unreasonable expectations on our spouse, in seeking from them what they cannot provide.
